In Parkersburg, West Virginia, on December 4, 1984, to parents Skylar Montgomery and Darlene Montgomery, a garage door supplier, was born Kasey Montgomery. She was raised in a middle-class home as the only child. She adopted the nickname Skylene, a mashup of both of her parents’ names, as a child and often dressed like a tomboy.
She first entered the world of pageants when she placed second in the Miss Teen West Virginia competition. She competed for Miss West Virginia 2008 and won. She was still driven to accomplish more. She represented West Virginia in the Miss USA competition a year later.
In West Virginia, Montgomery attended Petersburg South High School. She attended Marshall University in Huntington after finishing high school and earned a degree in exercise physiology there. She subsequently continued studying at West Virginia College for her communications and nursing degrees. She was an assistant at St. Mary Hospital in Huntington. She also worked as a medical field nurse, traveling to various locations to work, including the gastrointestinal intensive care unit at the Ochsner Medical Center. She has since graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans with a master’s in nursing science.

At a 2012 NFL match between the New Orleans Saints and the North Carolina Panthers, Montgomery and Payton first got to know one another. In 2019, Payton proposed to her on a Friday night at a restaurant in the French Quarter neighborhood of New Orleans, which is part of the Longway Tavern. The One & Only Palmilla Resort in Mexico City hosted a private ceremony where the pair exchanged vows in 2021.
