On May 4, 1929, Hepburn was born in Brussels, Belgium. She grew up in the Netherlands, England, and Belgium. Baroness Ella van Heemstra and Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston were her parents. In order to appear more aristocratic, her father Ruston changed his last name to Hepburn. Her dreams of becoming a professional ballerina were dashed when World War II broke out despite her training in ballet. Throughout the war, Hepburn and her family endured, and she even joined the Dutch Resistance to fight the Nazis.

First to actor Mel Ferrer and subsequently to doctor Andrea Dotti, Hepburn was married twice. Sean Ferrer and Luca Dotti, two of her boys, were born. She was in a relationship with Dutch actor Robert Wolders from 1980 till her passing.
