On October 5, 1975, in Reading, Berkshire, to parents Sally Anne, a nanny and waitress, and Roger John Winslet, an actor, was born Kate Elizabeth Winslet. She has a brother Joss, two actress sisters named Anna and Beth, and two other siblings. The Reading Repertory Theatre Company was managed by the Winslet maternal grandparents, who were themselves actors.

Winslet’s family relied on free meal benefits provided by a charity, the Actors’ Charity Trust, because they were not wealthy when she was growing up. She was bullied by her peers frequently because she was overweight as a child.

Winslet wed Edward Abel Smith, a relative of billionaire Richard Branson, in December 2012. 2013 saw the birth of their son Bear.
