Paula Maxine Patton was born on December 5, 1975, to lawyers Joyce and Charles Patton in Los Angeles, California, United States. Her paternal ancestry is African, while her maternal ancestry is German and Dutch.
She graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School, attended the University of California, Berkeley, and after her first year switched to the film program at the University of Southern California. She obtained a three-month job filming documentaries for PBS after finishing her studies.

Patton contributed backup vocals on Usher’s Confession Album in 2004. She co-starred with Will Smith in her first movie, Hitch, in 2005. She appeared in the drama London as well.
