Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in Arlington County, Virginia, to parents John Wilson Bullock, an Army employee from Birmingham, Alabama, and Helga Mathilde, a German opera singer and vocal teacher. When her father was stationed in Nuremberg, her parents met there. Bullock’s maternal grandpa was a Nuremberg-based German rocket scientist. She was born in Nuremberg, Germany, and reared in Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, so she spoke German until she was a teenager. Her father eventually started working for The Pentagon as a contractor after the family relocated to Arlington. Gesine Bullock-Prado, Bullock’s younger sister, served as the head of her production firm Fortis Pictures.

Bullock was raised studying singing and ballet, and she frequently accompanied her mother, who had supporting roles in her opera performances. She participated in the kids’ opera chorus while she was at Nuremberg.
