Serena Williams has announced her retirement from tennis following a career in which she won the most grand slam trophies of any player, male or female. The multi-award winner has four Olympic gold medals, five tour finals victories, 73 titles in all, and has been ranked world number one for 319 weeks.
The 41-year-old American revealed the news in a Vogue piece published yesterday afternoon. “I’ve never liked the word’retirement,'” she admitted. “Evolution may be the best word to express what I’m up to.” I’m here to inform you that I’m shifting my focus away from tennis and into other activities that are important to me.”
Williams said her decision had been influenced by the desire to expand her family. She gave birth to her first child, Olympia, in 2017 and returned to the circuit the following year and has since struggled with form and fitness.
