Steve Hoffmayer was born on August 29, 1964 in Pretoria. He studied acting at Gray’s College. Then in the early 80’s Steve Hofmeyer appeared on screen as an actor. He was one of his cast members in an Afrikaans drama show called Agter elke man. His time on the show boosted his fame and by the time he left, he had become a huge celebrity. He left the show to pursue a music career. He soon became a prominent singer-songwriter.

In 2011 he released a controversial song. In the song’s lyrics, he used the term “kaffia” in place of black in a derogatory manner. But Hoffmeier made no apologies for it.
On January 26, 2014, Hofmeyr married his fitness trainer girlfriend Janine van der Vyver. In late 2018, Vyver revealed that they had been seeing each other for ten years, by which point they already had a teenage daughter.
