About IMSU

Imo State University (IMSU) in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria was established in 1981 by Act 4 of Imo State House of Assembly. The university received its first intake of 392 pioneer students on October 23, 1981.

After the creation of Abia State in 1991, the university’s Uturu campus became Abia State University.

Imo State University is a full-time university. Most university programs are fully accredited by the National Universities Council (NUC) of Nigeria.

The results of the 1999/2000 National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise confirmed the university’s high status and acceptance by the Nigerian community. This university ranks first among all public universities in Nigeria and 10th among state and federal universities. Imo State indigenes at Imo State University were given free education under the then governor, Rochas Okorocha, but the program was discontinued in 2016.
